Transformed by the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program: Abigail Jordan's Story of Resilience

In December 2021, Abigail Jordan faced an unexpected turn in her career path when she was laid off from a small-town manufacturer in Northwest Georgia. With a General Studies Associate’s Degree, limited work experience, and living in a small town, Abigail searched diligently but quickly realized finding suitable employment would be difficult.

Guided by a Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Career Facilitator, Abigail began searching for a training program to enhance her skills and improve her employment outlook. Ultimately, she chose to pursue a career where she could serve and advocate for individuals and families, which led her to enroll in the Social Work Program at nearby Jacksonville State University (JSU).

Abigail benefited from the free training and ongoing support services provided through the TAA and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker programs, and she excelled, maintaining a flawless 4.0 GPA throughout her training. Even when faced with scheduling challenges at JSU, she persisted, resuming her studies in the Fall of 2023 and ultimately graduating summa cum laude with special honors in Social Work in May 2024.

With enhanced skills and employment potential, Abigail quickly received her first job offer. Shortly after starting the new job, she received a second offer, which she decided was a better opportunity. She accepted the second offer at $25 per hour, a substantial $11.60 increase from the $13.40 per hour she earned at the trade-impacted company.

Supported by the individualized career services and encouragement provided through the TAA Program, Abigail successfully gained new skills, leading to a substantial increase in her earnings and overall quality of life. Congratulations, Abigail.
